At 11:30 (UTC) Jean-Pierre Dick called his shore team to inform them that the port foil on StMichel-Virbac had been seriously damaged and was unusable. At the time the boat was sailing on a reach in 18 knots of wind.

Initially, Dick found no damage to his the hull and the trawler-style deck spreader/outriggerand wished to continue to the finish, the Sables d’Olonne.
However upon closer inspection of the damage and a study of the weather that indicates a giant depression soon to be forming, mid-Atlantic, Dick is concerned that further deterioration of the foils might cause damage to the deck spreader as that might compromise the integrity of the mast.
So StMichel-Virbac is also heading to Newport where Dick’s shore crew will join their skipper to remove the broken foil so StMichel-Virbac resume racing to Les Sables d’Olonne.
