Morgan Lagravière, a young skipper with a very impressive track record, was chosen in early 2014 to fly Safran’s colors in the IMOCA 60 class, especially for the next Vendée Globe solo round-the-world race in 2016. Morgan is one of today’s most promising young skippers.

Morgan Lagravière, born on Reunion Island in 1987, moved to France at the age of 16 to attend a sports academy. He quickly won several world championships, along with the title of French junior champion. Based on these accomplishments, in 2008 he was chosen as a member of the French Olympic sailing team.

Chosen to represent the Vendée region in the Figaro Bénéteau category, Morgan became the French solo ocean racing champion as early as his second season. So it was only natural that he has now shifted his focus to the IMOCA60 monohull racing boats – the top of the line for solo ocean racing.

Morgan’s athletic accomplishments are characterized by both perseverance and consistency. As a former member of the French Olympic sailing team, Morgan really embodies the three Olympic values, namely excellence, friendship and respect. He is widely known for his open mind, curiosity and commitment to making even a solo victory a team effort. While winning is of course what primarily drives him, he has also retained from his experience as teacher a taste for explaining things, helping people and transmitting his knowledge. These values are fully in synch with those of Safran, where performance is inextricably linked with the ability to work as a team.

Monocoque IMOCA

IMOCA60 Safran

Morgan Lagravière is not setting sail on just any old boat, as Safran was the first of the six brand new VPLP-Verdier designed boats launched for the 2016-2017 Vendée Globe. This 60-foot IMOCA is fitted with foils, the appendages aimed at enhancing performance downwind. Safran has a powerful hull, which is flatter towards the stern and has a greater volume at the bow. To make it easy to work in the cockpit, the principle was to build on the basis of a strong boat, Marc Guillemot’s first Safran. For his first race around the world, Morgan Lagravière clearly has a boat which should enable him to fulfil his ambitions. Safran, the second to bear this name, has already reached some incredible peak speeds rising up on her fluorescent yellow foils. Morgan Lagravière is now working with Roland Jourdain on fine-tuning their use.
