TRANSAT NEW YORK - BARCELONA
A New Race
In 2014, we have introduced the first of a series of new events. The Ocean Masters New York to Barcelona Race is the first of a series of new events of the IMOCA Ocean Masters World Championship circuit. It links two iconic cities and provides an ideal platform for the class to visit the amazing venues of Newport, Rhode Island and New York and racing across the Atlantic from New York to Barcelona in Spain.
The start took place on 1st June 2014.
A previous New York to Barcelona race record took place in 2010, introduced by the FNOB (Fundacio per la Navegacio Oceanica Barcelona), organizers of the Barcelona World Race (of which the 3rd edition starts on 31st December 2014), xx boats competed and the record was set by the team of Alex Pella, Pepe Ribes and Stan Schreyer onboard Estrella Damm, at a time of 12 days, 6 hours and 3 minutes.
Race Course details
The Race Prologue departed from Newport, Rhode Island on Saturday 24th May and the teams raced the 144 miles overnight to arrive into North Cove Marina in Downtown Manhattan on Sunday 25th May.
The teams then raced in the Hugo Boss Watches Manhattan Charity Race on Thursday 29th May, starting just off the North Cove Marina and racing down around Governors Island, past the Statue of Liberty and back to the finish line.
The Ocean Masters New York to Barcelona Transoceanic regatta and record Race started on Sunday 1st June 2014 at 1200 hours local time. The start of the transatlantic race itself was off North Cove Marin. Competitors sailed pass the Statue of Liberty before exiting New York Harbour. The 3700 mile course crosses the North Atlantic, passing through the Strait of Gibraltar and into the Mediterranean, where crews had to negotiate a tactical 525 miles along the Spanish coast before reaching the finish line just off the City of Barcelona.
